Pakistani rug weaving dates to the 11th century, and today the time-honoured tradition has grown into a thriving national industry. Pakistan is counted among the major exporters of rugs to the west. Inspired by Mughal architectural designs and influenced heavily by Persian weaving techniques, the rug craft of Pakistan is beloved for its highly detailed designs featuring popular motifs like medallion, gulls, palm leaves, traceries and classic geometric shapes.
Rug making is the second largest cottage industry in Pakistan, and is bolstered by the skills of Afghan refugees who have settled in the nation after fleeing their home. Pakistani rugs sometimes employ a full range of both natural and synthetic materials, showcasing a unique combination of innovation and tradition.
Perhaps the most popular rug style from Pakistan is Bokhara. Using Persian knots, these hand-woven rugs can be identified by the symmetrical patterns they use which feature, diamonds, ovals and an elephant’s foot. Pak-Persian rugs are also inspired by Persian rugs but boast a more contemporary design.
Aldar rugs from Pakistan have a repeated diamond-shaped gull motif lined up in rows while Jaldar rugs can be differentiated by their more angular shaped gulls. Sometimes called Ziegler, Chobi rugs use senneh knots to display lively floral patterns. Other Pakistan rug types include Caucasian, Peshawar and Oushak.
Whether rugs use natural or man-made fibres, they still require expert care during cleaning. Our first step is always to identify the materials and dyes used in rug construction. We will perform a dye test on your Pakistani rug and if its colours are unstable, we’ll treat the rug with a fixative to mitigate dye migration during cleaning.
Rugs are deep cleaned using gentle solutions and custom-designed equipment. We use rug washing pools and troughs which replicate traditional rug cleaning techniques that have provided the right results for thousands of years. Updated to a modern cleaning environment in our studio rugs are given an in-depth clean that extracts all soiling and odours.
